SANAA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Severe flooding caused by heavy rains and thunderbolts killed at least 11 people in northern Yemen in the past 24 hours, local authorities reported Thursday.

Nine of the victims were swept away by flooding in three districts of the northwestern province of Hajjah, while two others were killed by thunderbolts in the Haydan District in the adjacent province of Saada.

Several houses, farms and roads have been damaged.

In the past two weeks, 11 people were already killed by the floods in the capital Sanaa and the neighboring province of Dhamar, local authorities reported.

Residents are worried about epidemics spreading in the rainy season as the ongoing civil war has damaged the country's health system and disabled much of the infrastructure for clean water and sanitation.
